Life in a Castle

By Cate Kensie

Hi there!  I’m Cate Kensie!  Let me take a moment to introduce myself.

I’m a former professor of history, though my career never went that far, unfortunately.  I was always geared toward history.  My parents both worked for a museum, and I spent a lot of time exploring the artifacts there.  It gave me a love for all things history at a young age.

I excelled in school, so I just kept on going until I received my Ph.D. in History.  I took a teaching job at Aberdeen College in the small town of Aberdeen.  Shortly after that, my parents died in a car accident.  With no siblings, I was on my own.  That is, until I found Riley, my little black and white pup.  He filled up my life and we did everything together.

I really thought that would be it for my life!  I’d spend my time at Aberdeen College, hanging out with Riley after a long day of teaching or playing fetch with him on Saturdays at the park.

When Mr. Smythe showed up on my doorstep, needless to say I was surprised.  I didn’t think I had any relatives out there but here was a man claiming otherwise.  I wasn’t sure he was correct, especially after he showed me the pictures of my inheritance.  Dunhaven Castle was unbelievable in photos.  It didn’t seem real!  And that was only the pictures!

When he told me DNA confirmed me as the heir to the MacKenzie estate, I made a snap decision to move to Scotland.  It was outside of my normal behavior but nothing felt more right in my life.  I prepared for weeks for my move.  At times it seemed surreal, but nothing was more surreal than the moment I arrived at Dunhaven Castle.

I can still recall as thought it was only yesterday.  Mr. Smythe pulled up to the castle’s front door.  The moment I stepped from the car is cemented in my mind.  It looked huge!  The gray-brown stone, the turrets rising from the corners, the massive wooden front doors were all very imposing.  Yet the first thing that came to mind and settled into the pit of my stomach was an overwhelming sense of home.

I was tempted to ask someone to pinch me to make sure it was real.  After meeting my staff (also surreal), I took my first steps into the massive foyer.  My boot heels clicked against the marble floor and my eyes floated upward, taking in the grandeur of the space.

The enormous staircase was framed with hand-carved wood railings, polished to shine.  Thick red carpet created a pathway upward, disappearing in two separate directions, leading to different hallways.

I spent the next day with Gayle Pearson, Mr. Smythe’s assistant, taking a tour of my new home.  I don’t think I can count all the rooms we saw.  Each one more amazing than the last!  One of my favorites is my library.  With the thick, dark, rich woods making up the floor-to-ceiling bookcases, desk and trim all framed by thick tartan curtains, I’m not sure it could be any more perfect!  It’s inviting and cozy, especially those deep, comfy leather armchairs near the massive fireplace.

My other haven is my bedroom suite.  WOW!  It’s bigger than my old apartment.  With a sitting room complete with a chaise lounge and a bed that gives new meaning to the phrase “climb into bed,” the room is simply amazing!

Those are two of my favorite places inside the castle.  Of course, there are plenty more amazing rooms just waiting for me to explore their secrets.  Right after the new year, Jack and I discovered a secret passage in the library.  I’ll be there’s plenty more, too!

I can’t wait to see what other secrets my new home holds.  But in short, yeah, it’s pretty awesome to live in a castle!
