Helen “Dabsy” Dabson was young, beautiful, and wealthy beyond belief; everything needed to embrace the opulence of the Roaring Twenties. Birthed into a life of privilege, Dabsy spent time with friends smoking, drinking, and engaging in merriment. Easily bored, Dabsy willingly broke with tradition to try anything that captured her attention. Already a fun-loving socialite with a conscience, Dabsy decides to take over the society pages of her uncle’s newspaper. She quickly discovers that what started as a lark has turned into a crusade to report the news. Will Dabsy’s avid curiosity put her life in danger?

Dabsy on Society by Kenneth R. Leonard Sr. is a wonderfully written story of a 1920s lady adventure in the newspaper business.

Will Dabsy find her true calling?

Helen “Dabsy” Dabson

Our main character is Dabsy. No one calls her Helen is just makes her feel so drab. Dabsy is a very wealthy lady who has her rich uncle wrapped around her finger. However, she isn’t your regular socialite. Dabsy wants something of meaning to do. She also wants women to be paid their worth, even if that is more than a man’s worth, then so be it. She is refreshing and yet at times comes across as spoiled. However, I truly enjoyed reading about her exploits. I will say that she keeps her uncle on his toes. Dabsy manages to slide things past him quite a bit.

Dabsy’s Ladies

Dabsy on Society CRDabsy knows that she is going to make her uncle’s newspaper better than it is now. She also knows that she will need women to get it done. She goes out and finds herself a photographer, secretary, and artist. Gloria is a fabulous photographer, who really takes to this job. She isn’t afraid to really get in there and get that photo. Pamela has won contests for penmanship and she has a way with words. Gloria and Pamela are roommates. Rose is the artist, she creates these fabulous political cartoons.

The thing is these ladies work hard and Dabsy fights for their raises, expenses, and rights. She even protects them when a male reporter tries to steal the story.

Five Stars

This novella is sweet. It’s really fast to read, with lots of 1920s lingo. There is even a glossary of slang words to help you figure out what they are saying. I adore Dabsy and hope that we get to join her on her next adventure. Dabsy on Society by Kenneth R. Leonard Sr. is five stars and I recommend it to anyone that likes historical stories.
