Will the cruel King succeed in ruining the Kingdom? Or will Meera and Tamon join force to beat him?
Positive Aspects
The worldbuilding seems to have significantly been thought about. I liked knowing what Meera and some of the villagers know of what would happen if they broke rules that their king put out. There is still much to learn about the world then from what we know of what Meera’s village looks like and what the castle where Tamon lives.
Meera and Tamon
Meera and Tamon both seem to be different and well developed. She is our main female character, and we follow her a bit in the book. Meera has a great promise from what we can see in the novel. Tamon is our main male character, who is a lot different than what Meera and the other villagers perceive him to be. Tamon has two sides of him. The first side of Tamon that we see is the side that is like his father, who is a cruel person. The second and last side of Tamon is not happy with himself for doing what his dad wants and wants to stop him. I like these two characters, but I wish that what was put into the plot summary actually came forth.
The Magic System
I liked the magic system as it seems like only certain people are born with this power. I just wish we saw more of it than what we did see. Meera only sees it being used as a way to instill fear, so what I’m curious about is what happens when the magic is used for good rather than for evil like it is currently. Along with the negative outputs of using the magic.
Negative Aspects
As this book is the first one for Ms. Moore, I just can’t help but think that she leaves a lot to be desired with her first book. The plot summary shows a lot of promise, but I was skeptical of her fitting everything in a 48-page book. I am right about that as everything she says in the plot summary she barely scrapped over. Ms. Moore also has some grammatical errors and the fixing of some paragraphs. I also would like to say that I think that this book could do well as maybe a full-sized novel than just a novella with showing more about the worldbuilding, the magic system, give us more with Tamon and Meera. And maybe let us know what happened to her brother. Did he die like his father, or are they keeping him locked up somewhere? Also, did their father really die, or is he locked up somewhere as well? Maybe the author will answer these questions in the next installment of this series.
Three Stars
Ashes in the Night by Emma Moore has a great beginning that could do well in maybe a bigger sized novel. There is a lot of good going for her, but just need a lot more explanation than what we got in this 48-page novella. I know that I have a lot of questions and trying to figure out how the plot summary works with this novella. Ms. Moore has a promise of being a great author just only if this novella was longer to give us more of what we need to know about this fascinating world and everything else. Meera and Tamon are an excellent start for two love interests that are going to be in enemies to friends to lovers type of relationship I can tell.
I am giving this book a three-star rating, and I’m not sure if I’m recommending it just quite yet.
