Try as we might, rarely do we receive second chances to fix previous indiscretions…

In the case of Dez Hourie, a sergeant in the top-secret Hyperphonic division of the U.S. Air Force, she’s about to experience one of those supposed instances.

With her superiors clamoring to shut down the program due to their dissatisfaction with the results thus far, Dez is backed into a corner considering the military’s reluctance to use human test subjects.

If the program is disbanded, who knows where they’ll send her next?

Things become even more complicated once she runs into an old “friend,” who has evolved from his dorky undergrad days into a present-day hunk—a transformation that leaves the sergeant feeling foolish to say the least—once she also discovers that he’s engaged.

With an uncertain future staring her in the face both personally and professionally, Dez decides to roll the dice, convincing the research team leader that the only solution to their problems resides in the past.

Left with seemingly no choice, he reluctantly agrees. However, Dez is about to learn what many others before her have—and that is in this life—there are no coincidences.

An Encounter with Destiny by Blythe Dowling-Eversly is how Dez meets an old college friend and has the utmost thought that they were meant to be together. Dez decides to go back in time to try to change the future.

Will Dez succeed in changing the future?

Sergeant Destiny Hourie

Destiny, Dez, Hourie’s life is pretty sad. It revolves around her working at her top-secret military job and going home to nurse her bad leg, unless her only friend drags her out to go to a club. So when the past catches up to her in the form of a hunky guy who used to be a dork in college, she realizes that this would be the perfect way to prove that the time machine project is useful. Dez is one of those people who makes a decision but forgets about the planning part that’s supposed to happen after making the decision.

A lot happens in this book, and I think that Dez learns some maturity that her age requires of her. I don’t think I would’ve ever done what Dez did, though.

The Story

Destiny Hourie is a sergeant in the Air Force, and she wants a good life. She makes a life-changing event while drunk after realizing that she might have just lost a good guy who turned out to be quite a catch in the future, when she had the chance in college. Dez decides to go back in time to right a wrong, while also hoping to be the one to walk down the aisle when she returns from the past. I think that Dez didn’t know about some of the problems when she made this decision, or what would happen when they got back.

The story had a great premise.

Three Stars
