Amelia Sand is a student at Ainsworth Academy, where nonhumans are taught to be “civilized.” But for the rulers of Umbra—humans who came through a world-gate from Earth and now sit upon the thrones—that’s not enough. When Amelia discovers their plans to use magic to force her and her fellow monsters into blind obedience, she sets out to stop them.

Everyone knows goblins can't be heroes, so Amelia visits a world-gate to find human champions of her own. But instead of mighty young heroes, she gets stuck with two old women who have no interest in magic or fighting.

With her friend Boa (a talking shimmer snake), Amelia joins former teacher Ruth and absent-minded Lily on a quest to save the “uncivilized” peoples of Umbra. Full of humor and hilarious goblin hijinks, Amelia Sand and the Silver Queens is a story about finding unexpected family and learning to trust in your own power.

Amelia Sand and the Silver Queens by Jim C. Hines is about discovering that you are worth it despite what you are.

Can a goblin save her world?

Amelia Sand

Amelia Sand has been led to believe that goblins and the other monsters of her world are not civilized and shouldn’t continue to be what they are. That led her to find out that their leaders aren’t exactly good people either, and she wants to overthrow them.

At first, I didn’t care for Amelia, but as I read further into the book, I realized that what she was doing made sense. Amelia made me feel sorry for her since she is a goblin that doesn’t fit in with them, but she’s not human; they don’t care about her, so she’s lost.

The StoryAmelia Sand and the Silver Queens CR

Amelia Sand decided to overthrow her government with her own set of high humans because of what the current King and Queen wanted to do to them. I have to say that I definitely wouldn’t want to be stuck in Umbra. It’s not a safe place. I wouldn’t even do it for magic. The Silver Queens have a lot to fix before anything can indeed happen.

Four Stars

My rating for Amelia Sand and the Silver Queens by Jim C. Hines is four stars. I also recommend it to any middle grade readers who like fantasy books. Mr. Hines transported me to Umbra and made me realize that no matter what anyone does, we can cause chaos even when we don’t mean it.

About Jim C. Hines

Jim C. Hines

Jim C. Hines’ first novel was Goblin Quest, the humorous tale of a nearsighted goblin runt and his pet fire-spider. Actor and author Wil Wheaton described the book as “too f***ing cool for words,” which is pretty much the Best Blurb Ever. After finishing the goblin trilogy, Jim went on to write the Princess series of fairy tale retellings and the Magic ex Libris books, a modern-day fantasy series about a magic-wielding librarian, a dryad, a secret society founded by Johannes Gutenberg, a flaming spider, and an enchanted convertible. He’s also the author of the Fable Legends tie-in Blood of Heroes, the Janitors of the Post-Apocalypse trilogy of humorous science fiction, and two middle grade books. His short fiction has appeared in more than 50 magazines and anthologies.

Jim won the Hugo Award for Best Fan Writer in 2012. He has an undergraduate degree in psychology and a Masters in English, and lives with his family in mid-Michigan. You can find him at his website.
