Served Him Right by Lisa Unger is a well-written, thoughtful, and suspenseful novel.

Will Ana and Vera’s past continue to direct their futures?

This book is told from multiple points of view and shows that actions have many consequences. Sometimes you pay the price, and sometimes someone else does. It centers around sisters, direct blood sisters or those that become our sisters through a lifetime of knowing and caring.

I really liked how the author showed women from the past to the present, revealing their unseen strength. There is always going to be someone who has more power and money than you. But how you handle yourself and protect what is yours shows your true character. There is a distinct show of herbalism and possible magic shown in the storyline.

The Blacksmith Sisters

Agnes and Sadie

Our first set of sisters is Agnes and Sadie. Anges is the elder; she understands what she has inherited and what she must do. Sadie is younger and headstrong. She marries and has two daughters. However, her relationship with her husband is volatile, and he ends up beating her or the girls. In a twist of fate, Sadie’s husband dies, and Sadie is arrested and sentenced to prison. However, she doesn’t last long in prison and dies shortly after being sentenced. Agnes takes responsibility for Sadie’s girls and brings them back to her home. Agnes has a lot going on, and raising her two nieces is an added burden, but I truly believe that she loves them even though she doesn’t always know how to show it.

I like Agnes. She is strong, patient, and extremely intelligent. Agnes is also a good teacher and has a strong moral compass.

Vera and Ana

Vera and Ana are Sadie’s daughters. The oldest is Vera. She needs to be in control, and even though she is as strong as Agnes, she chooses a different path. Vera puts her family first: her husband, two children, and her sister. Vera is my favorite character. She grows so much throughout the story. She was strong at the beginning, but her strength really shone when she let her family stand with her.

Ana is the younger sister and a bit wild. She is also strong, but she lacks the control or compassion that Vera has. Ana has been cared for by Vera most of her life. Sometimes, it is as if she is one of Vera’s kids. I liked Ana, but I also felt she was protected and didn’t always have to face the consequences of her actions. She is a great character with flaws that she is also working on.

Coraline

Coraline is Vera’s daughter, and Grant is her younger brother. Since the family passes their herbal knowledge down through the women, Grant isn’t given the lessons. However, Coraline is, and she is just as strong as Vera and Ana, but she needs more discipline before she can master the craft. Ana has been teaching her, and you can see Ana’s wild influences in Coraline’s decisions. But there are also reasons behind her actions.

The Mystery

The story is about a group of women who use herbal teas and remedies, potions if you prefer, to right wrongs for women. Agnes is in charge and leaves the group in Vera’s hands, but that isn’t what Vera wants. At least not at that time in her life. So, the group has appointed a council that passes judgment on its members’ actions. This is not what Agnes wanted, and the feeling of family is gone from the group since her passing.

The death of Ana’s ex-boyfriend is the turning point for everyone. Some believe that Ana did the deed, but with Vera’s assistance. However, many people didn’t like Ana’s ex, and the more we learn, the more we realize he isn’t a nice guy. Hence the title, Served Him Right.

Four Stars

My rating for Served Him Right by Lisa Unger is four stars. I really enjoyed the story, use of herbalism, the “Cove,” and the characters. However, bouncing between the different characters’ points of view was useful; sometimes it was tricky and repeated something I had already discovered. Yet it was nice to get the sisters’ backstories and their relationships. The author has a specific theme throughout the story that I appreciated and completely understood. I highly recommend this book.
