Annabeth returns in the third installment of the biggest series yet from Rick Riordan, author of the #1 New York Times best-selling Heroes of Olympus, Kane Chronicles, and Percy Jackson andamp; the Olympians series. In The Son of Neptune, Percy, Hazel, and Frank met in Camp Jupiter, the Roman equivalent of Camp Halfblood, and traveled to the land beyond the gods to complete a dangerous quest. The third book in the Heroes of Olympus series will unite them with Jason, Piper, and Leo. But they number only six--who will complete the Prophecy of Seven? The Greek and Roman demigods will have to cooperate in order to defeat the giants released by the Earth Mother, Gaea. Then they will have to sail together to the ancient land--Greece itself--to find the Doors of Death. What exactly are the Doors of Death? Much of the prophecy remains a mystery...With old friends and new friends joining forces, a marvelous ship, fearsome foes, and an exotic setting, The Mark of Athena promises to be another unforgettable adventure by master storyteller Rick Riordan.
A Quest sent by Athena to Annabeth
To me a lot has happened in this book. We learn that Athena sends only the bravest and smartest of her kids to find a statue that the Romans stole and put away somewhere safe where no one would find it. We have all seven of the demigods together on one ship with Coach Hedge to supervise them.
Going back to the Homelands
We also find out that no demigod from either of the two camps have “gone back to the homelands”, meaning Greece and Rome, because of the many monsters that live in the Mediterranean Sea. Though it is there that Leo, Frank, and Hazel fell overboard. It was at the underwater palace that we found a training center for the underwater heroes. Though Percy was quite upset that they didn’t want to meet him, even though he is the son of the water god.
A nymph inlove with a Hero
We also encounter a hero turned god and a goddess before the trek to Rome. Along with meeting a nymph called Echo, the poor girl, and a demigod that was obsessed with his own reflection. A lot of very good, cool, and interesting things has happened in this book and I just don’t want to spoil it at all. Especially with Aphrodite’s weird message to Annabeth.
The Mark of Athena is Cool
Out of the whole book there is only one thing that I disliked about it and that was at the end after they helped Annabeth at the last leg of her journey, on the Mark of Athena quest, all only for her and Percy to end up in Tartarus. The worst place for a demigod to end up. Even if they need someone there to close the Doors of Death on that side. Though this book with the first two also had some character development going on but not a whole lot from with what I can remember.
This Review was previously posted on my blogspot site which I will be closing soon.
