Megan Holloway has learned a few hard truths in her twenty-eight-years. Life isn’t fair. People she loves always leave. And she’ll be stuck on Key West running her parents' gift store and raising her twelve-year-old niece for the rest of her life.

Thirty-year-old Bryan Westfall has come to Key West to clean out his dead brother’s apartment and search for answers about the woman who died with his estranged older brother. Bryan didn’t know the woman had a daughter and he sure didn’t expect her sister to floor him with her beauty and biting brashness.

Bryan’s persistent need to help and Meg’s bumbling business skills create an unlikely union. The more time they spend together, the more their feelings become too powerful to deny. Meg knows Bryan is leaving at the end of the summer and Bryan knows Meg is holding back to spare herself needless heartache. When a hurricane forces them to evacuate, Meg mentally prepares to let Bryan go while Bryan wonders if home is where he came from or is with the woman who stole his heart.

The Last Lap by Christy Hayes is the story of two people finding each other after a tragedy.

Will Megan and Bryan find the way past their siblings’ death to love and happiness?

Megan

Megan is a feisty opinionated redhead who hides her soft gushy center. She is the younger sister of the popular Amanda. Megan and her sister were a team. They would split the work and responsibility of running their family store and caring for Amanda’s daughter, Lily. Amanda was her best friend. But from the outside, it could be said that Megan hid from life by staying in Amanda’s shadow.

I think Megan allowed herself to take the easy way out by staying for her sister. Megan starts out extremely angry. It isn’t until a stranger, and his friend give her the time to grieve her sister’s death. I like Megan. She is loyal, reliable, and pretty inside and out. Seeing her open up and become the person she wants to be is nice.

Bryan

Bryan is tall and handsome. He is the younger brother of “the barnacle” (Corey Westfall), who was with Megan’s sister when they died. Corey was a drifter and a user. Bryan had first-hand experience with this, and his brother took advantage of him too. However, Bryan is nothing like his brother. He is a high school math teacher with a good head on his shoulders. Corey, like Amanda, was the popular one that everyone liked. Bryan is in Key West to pack up his brother’s things, figure out how Corey afforded his lifestyle, and report back to his parents.

I like Bryan. His patience and assistance with Megan and Lily are adorable and honorable. He even puts up with his best friend Dustin’s moping. Bryan and Megan together seem to complete each other.

The Last Lap CRThe Romance

I genuinely love how Ms. Hayes tells the story from both their point of views. She does a fantastic job creating this wonderful setting for them to figure out what they want and need to feel better in life. I haven’t met many men like Bryan Westfall, who is the perfect match for Megan.

It is lovely to see the transformation of Megan and Lily throughout the story.

Five Stars

When I continue to think of the characters and their predicaments while going about my regular day, I know it’s a brilliant story. The Last Lap by Christy Hayes is precisely that, and my rating is five stars. The setting, romance, characters, and life’s twists and turns are perfectly played out. I highly recommend The Last Lap by Christy Hayes to all you romance readers.

My one question is what happened with Dustin and Teagen?
