Blackmail, the victim’s abusive ex-boyfriend, an angry neighbor, and a shifty Symphony Board member all lead her to feel she is on the right track.

With the dogged Lieutenant Gordon on her trail, she must flee from the police so she can continue her search. She unexpectedly finds a loyal female friend and the possibility of a new man in her life. But she must learn to trust again after her failed and abusive marriage. With time running out, will she be able to evade the lieutenant, face her personal demons, and clear her name?

Interview with Golden the Dog

Olive Patterson, second bassoon in Colorado’s Monroe Symphony, was recently murdered. The sleuth’s dog, Golden, an impartial observer, was lured out of the pages of Music is Murder with treats and a belly scratch. She has agreed to be interviewed by BJ Bowen, author of the novel and Golden’s creator.

BJB: Emily Wilson is the protagonist and sleuth in the novel, Music is Murder. You’re her dog?

Golden: Prefer to say she’s my person, but otherwise correct. She feeds me and takes me for walks. I help her.

BJB: But you don’t have any direct influence on the story. Right?

Golden: Course I do! Keep Emily going. Keep her encouraged. No direct influence! Ha!! Without me there is no story.

BJB: How so?

Golden: Keep Emily company. Let her know who’s okay. Doggy approval required.

BJB: Does Emily consult you?

Golden: Doesn’t know she does, but opinion important. Wag tail if approve. Golden like almost everyone, but exceptions important.

BJB: Can you give an example of Emily’s consulting your opinion?

Golden: Her new friend, KC. If not for me, she not accept KC, and if she not accept KC, she has no help. Emily screwed.

BJB: Meeting KC and their developing friendship are key points in the novel.

Golden: Help, too, by the way two-legs react to me. Only unfriendly two-legs don’t like me. Hard not to like.

BJB: Would you put Lt. Gordon in that group?

Golden: Yes. Not bad man, but doesn’t appreciate doggy joy.

BJB: In the novel, you don’t talk. Why is that?

Golden: Talk with body. Words too easy to misunderstand. Only doing it now because you asked with doggy treats. My favorites.

BJB: At one point in the novel Emily goes away and leaves you with KC. Did Emily overreact?

Golden: Humpf. Bad judgement. KC nice two-leg, but Emily need me.

BJB: How could you have helped?

Golden: She sad. Never sad if Golden’s there. Golden lick. Cuddle. Nudge.

BJB: You sound like a dog with a purpose.

Golden: True. Take care of Emily. Can’t do that if I not with her.

BJB: It must have been hard to have Emily gone for so long.

Golden: Worse for her. I like everybody, especially KC. But need to take care of Emily. My job. She needs me. That’s why ignored her when she got back.

BJB: Emily tells me it wasn’t too bad.

Golden: Hmpf. She thinks I responded to hot dogs. Really, I just forgiving dog.

BJB: Well, thanks for talking with me, Golden. I’ll let you go back to your home in the novel now, so you can take care of Emily.

Golden (wriggling joyfully): Anytime, smart creator. But don’t forget treats.
