Murder at Magic Cakes Cafe by Rosie ReedMurder at Magic Cakes Cafe

Author: Rosie Reed

Genre: Cozy Paranormal Mystery

Pages: 307

Release Date: March 1, 2021

Summary:

In a flash, she had magic. Can she use it to solve a mysterious death in her family?

Climbing a tree in a thunderstorm was always going to be a stupid idea, but when Evelyn Eldritch is struck by lightning, her magical powers are switched on. And she didn’t even know she was a witch!

When Evelyn learns that her biological mother has died under suspicious circumstances, she makes a journey to the quaint village of Maiden-Upon-Avon, where the residents consist of werewolves, witches, vampires and one annoyingly handsome-yet-gruff policeman. But who should she suspect? Who can she trust?

And if juggling her magical training, her mother’s café, and the town’s eccentric residents wasn’t enough, another body turning up at the local cricket match shows she’s definitely in well over her pointed hat…

Murder at Magic Cakes Café is the first book in the adorable English Village Witch Cozy series, set in the beautiful English countryside. If you love plucky heroines, small-town whodunits, and a touch of retro nostalgia, then you’ll love Rosie Reed’s fun and flirty tale.

Interview with Evelyn Eldritch

How did you and your author meet?

We’ve known each other a long time. Rosie and I are very similar, and we often get together to chat about life over a cup of tea and a slice of Victoria sponge cake.

Why did this writer decide to feature you in a book?

She thought I would be perfect for the English Village Witch Cozy series because I’m English and also a witch! I didn’t realise I was a witch for the first twenty-seven years of my life. I was sceptical about magic at first, but now I’m embracing it, despite not being very good at it! Rosie enjoys giving me mysteries to solve – and policemen to flirt with!

I’m a trainee therapist, so I’m good at reading people. Detective Inspector Taylor is very logical and assertive, so he’s great at interrogating suspects. I tend to ‘kill people with kindness’ by flattering them and taking an interest until they gradually open up. We make a pretty good team, although he would undoubtedly disagree and say I get in his way. He loves me really! 😉

Do you have any friends or family helping you out?

My adoptive nephew Luke is my sidekick. He’s a strapping twenty-one year-old medical student, who often comes to Maiden-Upon-Avon to visit, and helps me solve the murder. People often think it’s strange that I have a twenty-one-year-old nephew, because I’m only twenty-seven. But my sister Gemma is ten years older than me, so my parents decided to adopt me after they were unable to give Gemma a playmate. But when Gemma was sixteen, she created her own playmate, and Luke and I grew up together in the same household. With only six years between us, he’s like my little brother. And he’s my best friend.

Also, my sex-mad senior witch granny, Joanie, helps me with my magic training, teaching me new spells and giving me relevant info at the beginning of each case – a bit like Q in James Bond!

Do you have a regular job and investigate on the side or are you a full time detective?

I inherited Magic Cakes Café when my biological mother Marilyn was murdered, so I’m trying to make a go of that. I’m training to be a therapist, but I really enjoy assisting Detective Inspector Taylor. I don’t think I would actually join the police though. He takes care of all the boring paperwork and fierce interrogating, whilst I have fun and do magic badly!

What is the funniest thing that happens to you or another character in this story?

I experience quite a few humorous situations in this story, sometimes slapstick. For example, I bump into things when I’m trying to act cool, and I end up covered in exploding cake for cheating at the village cake contest by using magic. There are also some amusing scenes, such as the Beings of Magic Committee chapter, and the fun and flirty banter between me and Detective Inspector Taylor.

Have you solved other cases or is this your first one?

This is my first one, and really I only got involved so I could find out who’d killed my biological mother, Marilyn. Saying that though, I’ve always been really interested in solving puzzles. Also I love psychology and figuring out what makes people tick.

Do you have a gift or special talent?

I have magic! Also, I’m an empath, so I’m very sensitive to the feelings of others. I can pick up on their ‘energy’ and get in tune with them. This means that people tend to feel comfortable around me, and I can often get them to open up – even if that means they let slip too much information!

Who is the most important individual in your life?

Definitely my nephew Luke. As I said, we grew up together like brother and sister, and he’s such a decent guy. He’s funny and fun, and we sometimes revert to childish play fights, such as kicking each other under the table – very mature, I know! One of his favourite things to do to me is pick me up upside down, and tickle me. I used to do the same to him when he was smaller than me, so it’s his revenge! My nickname for him is Titch, which is a hangover from when he really was smaller than me. Also, I like to call him Cheeky Chops in front of girls he fancies. We adore each other and I’m so glad he’s in my life.

What is your ideal vacation?

I love travelling to new places to find out how other people live. I do believe travel broadens the mind. But saying that, I do love a beach holiday where I can just chill out with a good book. Really, I’m happy anywhere I can get a cup of tea!

If you could change anything about your life what would it be?

I’m very happy in my life, now that I’ve had my magic switched on and I’ve connected with my biological family – whilst being able to keep my adoptive family close. But one thing I would like is to go on a date with Detective Inspector Taylor. He’s so hunky with his sparkling green eyes and delightful dimples when he smiles – which alas isn’t that often. But I can see through his steely wall. I know there’s a good man in there and I can’t wait to get him under my covers… I mean, to uncover him.

About the Author

Rosie ReedI love writing, daydreaming, and creating stories. I often write for fun, even when I’m not planning on publishing. But it’s also wonderful to share my stories with you!

I’m a massive Agatha Christie and Terry Pratchett fan, so writing paranormal mystery comes instinctively! I love the understated gentle charm of cozies, and it’s always such a pleasure to spend time in the company of the wonderful sleuths and magical characters that my fellow authors create.

Writing the English Village Witch Cozy series helped to keep me sane during the very strange year of 2020. Evelyn and Alex have done a tremendous job of protecting my mental health, and it’s my pleasure to share this comfort with you.

I do hope you’ll enjoy escaping into the beautiful surroundings of Maiden-Upon-Avon, and having some fun with Evelyn and all the other magical beings who live there! So treat yourself now by taking the phone off the hook of life, and soaking in the bathtub of the English countryside for a while!
