Her Name Is Knight revolves around Nena Knight, codename Echo, a highly trained assassin for The Tribe – a clandestine international organization dedicated to the protection and advancement of the peoples and countries of Africa around the world. Her Name Is Knight is a propulsive character story and action thriller driven by retribution, passion, strength — and coming to terms with your own true self, regardless of what anyone calls you.

Her Name is Knight by Yasmin Angoe is an emotionally charged, edge-of-your-seat novel that is not for the light of heart. Duly set in the protagonist’s past in Ghana and present in the United States as an assassin, this book is brutal and violent, so readers be wary! There is an Author’s Note at the beginning of the novel that I would encourage all to read.

NENA

Our main character Nena, or Echo the assassin, has had a rough past. That’s not true; she’s had just about the roughest past one can imagine. Her family murdered and herself tortured, she was sold into slavery, we can’t really blame her for seeking vengeance as a super-spy assassin. Of course, not all is well in the “Tribe”, the organization Nena works for, and doubt creeps into her life. I didn’t connect with Nena as I do with some main characters. I just didn’t buy into or believe her story as much as I wanted to. It could have been the violence though that made me pull back from the story. That being said, Yasmin Angoe introduces herself as a brave, no holds barred author, and I expect her to have an abundant fan base for her novels to come.

DIFFICULT THEMES

This novel dives headfirst into topics like torture, rape, revenge murder, and human trafficking. Again, it is not for the light of heart. I found it difficult to keep going, even though the writing was engaging. I also struggle when it comes to romance and sex in novels. I guess I’m picky about how it is presented and unfortunately Her Name is Knight didn’t hit the mark for me.
With super-strong female characters, suspenseful dual timelines, and revenge that just keeps hitting, there will be many fans of the Nena Knight series and author Yasin Angoe!
