Interview with Paige Papillon

How did you and your author meet?

Funny thing, I think Lily met my wardrobe first. She liked my look, but initially she wanted to focus on my BFF, Shayla. And then she thought about Vera, my mentor. I’m not sure how I popped up, but something I said about Vera in a dream she had sort of made us become friends. Is friends a good word, since the woman is driving me up the wall?

Why did this writer decide to feature you in a book?

I made a comment about Vera in her dream, that she was stupid for following a predetermined destiny. (One that I still don’t really know about, by the way.) And my opinion made Lily realize I was a good candidate for a main character. I’m definitely nothing like her other “babies” except for the fact that my favorite color is black.

Do you have any friends or family helping you out?

My parents are retired jetsetters, so they’re not much help (nor do they approve of my profession). But I have my BFF I’ve known since I was five, Shayla Moreau. She runs a new agey shop called The Enchanted Elder and has the sweetest cat, Maura.
Then we have Sergeant Jon King and his wife, Vera, who writes urban fantasy mysteries that I LOVE. They’re my benefactors and helped set up my business and give me invaluable insight into the paranormal world.
And we have Officer Zeke Randale. Jon asked him to kinda keep an eye on me, and despite the fact that I’m not great at socializing, he’s become a good friend. He’s handsome, too. Does that matter?

Do you have a regular job and investigate on the side or are you a full time detective?

Full-time, thanks to Jon and Vera. So, paranormal crime is a BIG DEAL in Chicago. I hear there used to be a big government organization that helped take care of it, but it was shut down somehow, so there are a ton of non-humans who need assistance. I’m still not sure how many monsters are out there in the world, but I’m going to have fun finding out more and more about them as I help find missing familiars and investigate blood-related crimes!

What is the funniest thing that happens to you or another character in this story?

I wind up breaking and entering a storage unit and Vera nearly shoots me. It wasn’t funny at the time, but looking back, I’m amused that, number one, I’m alive, and number two, I had the guts to stand up to her the way I did.

Have you solved other cases or is this your first one?

I’ve solved a few human cases, including a lost Bichon Frise. But the beheaded bodies dropping all over Chicago will be my first paranormal case, and I’m kinda lowkey terrified. I don’t do well with change or accepting new ideas, and I’ve had to get used to a whole lot in a very small amount of time.

Do you have a gift or special talent?

So, this is going to be hard. I’m autistic, and due to my neurodiversity, I am capable of seeing things many others miss/overlook. I wouldn’t call it a special talent, and it’s certainly not a gift. I’m just … me. I was born this way, and I’m grateful I can do what I love with my autism as a helpmate rather than a crutch or JUST a disability.

Who is the most important individual in your life?

Shayla. She’s been my only friend for a long time (I mentioned I’m not great at socializing; I miss a lot of cues and say the wrong thing often). I’d be lost without her on this crazy journey with me.

What is your ideal vacation?

Go back in time and visit the Library of Alexandria!
No, seriously, I want to visit all the famous libraries like the one at Trinity College, Reading Room at the British Museum, places like that.

If you could change anything about your life what would it be?

I actually like my life right now, so nothing!
