The curtain may fall on the Calla Lily Players' first season unless Lily and Austin can find a killer on the loose in California's wine country.
Torrential rains threaten to put a damper on The Calla Lily Players’ first outdoor theater production. When the ground suddenly shifts, buried secrets revealed amid the tangled vines put the spotlight on murder. As Lily and Austin dig deeper into the mystery, the drama unfolds onstage and off. The race is on to find a killer before opening night.

A Tangle in the Vines by Anne Celeste Burke is fast-paced, full of twists and turns, along with humor and lots of hospitality. I adore the cast of characters, and the predicaments they get into are crazy. The mystery is top-notch and kept me guessing throughout.

Where did these bodies come from and who killed these people?

Lillian Callahan

Lillian Callahan or Lily as her friends call her is an actress from a popular soap opera. Lily inherited the Calla Lily Vineyards and Winery in Napa, California from her Aunt Lettie. I found Lily to be smart, curious, generous, savvy, and kind-hearted. However, she also has a bit of a temper, even if it takes a bit to show up.

Lily’s Visitors

Lily has her “posse” or her friends from Los Angeles visiting with her while they put together a play. Judy was Aunt Lettie’s best friend, and she is staying there too. Then a U. S. Marshal, Austin Jennings (Lily’s un-official boyfriend) stays off and on. And now, Lily is fostering Billie, a twelve-year-old boy. There are quite a few characters, and these don’t include the law enforcement personal local and federal that are hanging around.

Mystery

The mystery was so perfectly crazy. There were even more people involved along with mental illness, family dynamics, religion, ghosts, cursed land, a serial killer, and cold cases. They were all over the vineyard and forest reserve. So, like I said lots going on, but I loved the way everything was mixed together with the old and new.

4 Stars for A Tangle in the Vines by Anne Celeste Burke

Lily and her friends are formidable sleuths. The setting is lovely, the characters are well developed, believable, and hilarious, and the fast-paced mystery is superb. I am looking forward to the next installment. So, I am giving A Tangle in the Vines by Anne Celeste Burke four stars and recommending to all of you cozy readers out there.

The recipes are Crispy Butterscotch Praline Cookies, Mississippi Mud Cookies, Molasses Spice Cookies, and Figs and Prosciutto.

About Anna Celeste Burke

ANNA CELESTE BURKE

An award-winning, USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestselling author, I hope you’ll join me snooping into life’s mysteries with fun, fiction, and food—California style!

Life is an extravaganza! Figuring out how to hang tough and make the most of the wild ride is the challenge. On my way to Oahu, to join the rock musician and high school drop-out I had married in Tijuana, I was nabbed as a runaway. Eventually, the police let me go, but the rock band broke up.

Retired now, I’m still married to the same sweet guy and live with him near Palm Springs, California. I write the Jessica Huntington Desert Cities Mystery series set here in the Coachella Valley, the Corsario Cove Cozy Mystery Series set along California’s Central Coast, The Georgie Shaw Mystery series set in the OC, The Seaview Cottages Cozy Mystery Series set on the so-called American Riviera, just north of Santa Barbara, and The Calla Lily Mystery series where the murder and mayhem take place in California’s Wine Country.

  1. You are so awesome!! Thanks for the great feature on your blog and for the lovely review. I’m glad you like Lily and the ensemble cast–Billie! Oh, and the precious Marlowe the courageous Min Pin, of course. I’m working on the next book in the series–Fall’s Killer Vintage. It’s wine country so there just has to be a wine tasting event, but it’s a cozy mystery so there also has to be murder and mayhem. For release mid-November! xx
