Felicity Koerber’s bean to bar chocolate shop thriving. Despite everything she’s been through with the murders she’s helped solve, Felicity is ready to take on new challenges. So when a local museum offers her a contract to create a chocolate replica of a gigantic sailing ship sculpture for a gala celebrating Galveston’s history, she jumps at the chance to combine chocolate-crafting with art.
The project is fun – right up until there’s not just one but two dead artists on the scene, and Felicity has to change gears back to detective. Logan, Felicity’s business partner and previous bodyguard, and Arlo, Felicity’s ex who is now the cop investigating the case, are split on which victim they think was actually the intended one. Felicity may have to take some chances, both emotionally and in luring out a killer, to determine the truth.
Can she find out how Galveston’s history relates to the murders, unmask a killer, and prepare 2,000 chocolate desserts for the gala all at the same time?

A Shot in the 80% Dark by Amber Royer is a delicious mystery filled with unique characters.

Will Felicity figure out why Hernan was killed before the police do?

Felicity

Felicity is our sleuth, but she is also the co-owner of Greetings and Felicitations, a bean-to-bar chocolate shop in Galveston, Texas. She is a widow, but now she is in a love triangle and needs to decide which man she wants to hold that special spot in her life. Felicity wants a place where she can be happy, and others can be there to enjoy it too. Chocolate is, of course, a fabulous comfort food, so why not go to a chocolate shop?

I like Felicity; she is sometimes hard on herself. At times, she doesn’t seem to have much self-esteem. She makes these wonderful chocolate treats. Felicity has some really great friends, co-workers, and acquaintances. I like that she was willing to help out by taking care of the cockatoo. Felicity is working on getting over her husband and being in the present. I feel like she has grown throughout this installment. Which of the men in her life will she choose? I hope the author doesn’t drag it out too long.

A Shot in the 80% Dark CRThe Mystery

At the museum, building the sculpture of a ship, the power goes out, and it sounds like a shot is fired. When the lights come back up, two people are dead. But who is the actual target, Hernan or Amalie? This incident is a massive setback for Felicity and the chocolate shop with the museum shut down. She can’t complete the sculpture, and they will be out lots of money. What can she do other than figure out who killed them and get the museum open again? There are lots of things going on besides the mystery, like the making of a cookbook, lots of chocolate treats, scuba diving, and so much more.

Four Stars

I enjoyed  A Shot in the 80% Dark by Amber Royer, and my rating is four stars. Ms. Royer doesn’t include recipes in the book but shares a link to her website where you can get them. This is an interesting series with lots of moving pieces. I find it is original and very forward-thinking.
