River - He’s the last of his kind, a winged warrior hidden in the mountains. River Shaw has lost everything: his sanctuary, the only shield from a world that fears and hunts him. When Delene, another of his kind, crash-lands into his life, wounded and on the run, his solitude is shattered.
Delene - She’s a fugitive with a secret, escaping the clutches of dark forces that took everything from her. Delene Fairborne’s flight to freedom leads her to River and the spark of a bond neither can deny. In a landscape scarred by betrayal and danger, River and Delene must navigate their growing feelings and the sinister scientist who will stop at nothing to harness their power. Shadowed Skies is where love takes wing, hope soars, and destiny entwines. Dive into a world where every heartbeat is a rebellion, every glance a promise, and every flight a taste of freedom.
Shadowed Skies by Haley Cavanagh is a young adult dystopian science fiction book about two young teenagers fighting for survival.
Will River and Delene survive?
River Shaw
River Shaw has an identical twin brother, and the two of them were living on their own for a bit until his brother got taken away. Then River was alone until Delene showed up and made River realize that maybe having someone else in your life isn’t a bad thing. River is one of those characters who only speaks when they have something to say. I like how, when we are in River’s point of view chapters, we can see that he cares but doesn’t know how to show it, unlike his twin brother, but he is starting to learn. He is an okay character. I like how he has a lot of knowledge about survival skills in the mountains.
Delene Fairborne
Delene Fairborne and her sister were taken in by scientists until Delene escaped. She meets River in his nest, where he helps her heal her broken wing and improve her diet. Unlike River, Delene lacks the survival skills needed for the wild, but she knows how to scavenge from cars and abandoned buildings. She is a stubborn seventeen-year-old girl who wants to help the humans, but not in the way they are doing it. I like Delene for being a fighter, but also for still showing compassion to humans, even when they’ve wronged her kind.
The Romance
The romance between River and Delene is barely noticeable between the two of them at the beginning, but it starts to blossom as the book goes on. They are a cute couple, and I’m glad they are together, even if it didn’t begin in the best way.
Three Stars
My rating for Shadowed Skies by Haley Cavanagh is three stars, and I am still going to recommend it. Ms. Cavanagh is a good writer, and I liked how she uses her personal knowledge of some of the things that the characters did. I liked the Utah setting.
