How far would you go to be free—to make your own choices without being subjected to punishment for doing what you felt was right? Could you kill for it?
After being abandoned by her father as a child, Aster spent ten years of her life as a servant for the leader’s House in the broken city of New Bethel. She’d known, even as a child, that the cities of her world were corrupt places with human monsters—assassins—running rampant between their high walls.
Thinking everything will remain the same as it always has there, Aster is startled to discover that one day . . . the cycle breaks. As a young new leader takes a strange and—at times—horrifying interest in her, will she be capable of discovering the reasons behind his actions and orders?
In a world where nothing is as it seems and all things are never anywhere near as simple as they appear at first glance, will she be capable of making the distinction between what is real and what is not? Will she find anyone at all she can trust? More importantly . . . Does she have the strength to do what is necessary to survive in a world filled with evil?
Reave by C. Miller is about Aster remembering that life is worth living for and not just surviving.
Can Aster leave the only home she’s known for the past ten years?
Aster
Aster has lived a life of service for the past decade, which has made her somewhat sheltered. I mostly only say that because the only other servant she has talked to is a woman named Agatha. Agatha probably wasn’t a good choice for helping young Aster grow up in that house.
I liked Aster up to a point, and then I didn’t. Granted, I never grew up like she did, but I just feel like she grew up pretty sheltered, thanks to Agatha, while only knowing one way to do anything in that life. I know that I’m not making much sense, but Aster didn’t really make much sense either.
Aster is the only character that we really get to know, besides those with whom Aster interacts, since the narrative is written in the first person.
The Story
The story revolves around Aster’s life in the House she was put into when she was eight. Aster goes through the same motions until a new leader is put into the house, and then everything changes for her. She has to make many choices and decisions that were never possible for her before now. I have to say that the story was the part that kept me going.
Four Stars
My rating for Reave by C. Miller is four stars. Ms. Miller did an excellent job of weaving together a great story, even if I had a hard time connecting to the main character. I feel like one should give this book a chance just for the story.
