It’s 1974, and Michelle Kilpatrick has her hands full trying to keep her difficult mother happy while studying journalism at the University of Petersburg. The fall quarter gets more complicated when Michelle’s grades drop thanks to the demanding Professor Ladd, who believes Michelle should be more like the already-published Craig Miller. But, when Michelle discovers the professor’s dead body during office hours, grades are suddenly the least of her worries. With the help of her friends from the Commuter Lounge, Michelle sets out to clear her name and soon realizes Craig may be the key to unlocking the mystery around Professor Ladd’s murder. Will Michelle find the secrets behind Professor Ladd’s murder?
Michelle Kilpatrick
Our sleuth is Michelle Kilpatrick. She is a college student attending journalism classes and living at home with her parents. Her best friend, TJ, lives next door, and they commute to the college together. I like Michelle. She does have a hard time with her parents, as they believe she should settle down and help on the farm. If they were to get to know her, they would understand that it is not going to happen. Michelle is good at investigating and writing, and she doesn’t want to live the life of a farmer’s wife.
The Mystery
The mystery takes us into the secrets of Petersburg, Ohio. Michelle learns more about one of the founding families and how they maintained their wealth. She also learns about the corruption and all the secrets they kept in the name of their family. I enjoyed following her and her friends, and they found and shared information.
Four Stars
My rating for The Peculiar Case of the Petersburg Professor by Sharon Kay is four stars. I truly enjoyed the time frame of the mystery. The music that the author refers to and the 1970s setting are nice. It reminds me of perspectives from that time, compared to now. I recommend this cozy mystery to you. If Michelle keeps growing, she will be an official investigator, not a sleuth, soon.
