Some people think Ellen Hamilton, the business savvy daughter of the largest employer in town, is too big for her britches. After all it’s the 1950s and women have no place running factories. But when the Hamilton company is threatened with takeover by John Adair, the man who broke her heart and was run out of town years ago, the game is on. Has Ellen met her match? Or, will this time be different and will Ellen win everything—including the handsome and mysterious John.
My Thoughts: Completely loved it! Such a wonderful story of company espionage, small town mentality, politics of old and romance.
I loved the characters. Ellen is smart and charming, and yet she has to learn who she really is wallflower or executive. John is talented and ambitious. He knows what he wants at least he thinks he does. He wants to run Hamilton Company and crush Sam Hamilton in the process.
The supporting characters are also full of life. I love Cindy and the way she transformed herself for the different occasions. Sam is the perfect businessman, terrible father, who manipulates everything because he loves his children. Trigg is the lovable ole’ cowboy of the highest morals, or is he?
The setting in small town southern California, I picture it as one of the little towns near Bakersfield. Allison Morse’s descriptions of the area were so realistic that I could see it perfectly. I love the attitudes about people from Los Angeles. The references and cold war attitudes are so perfectly written. Oh, and the spider, nicely done, totally awesome, completely laughed out loud.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and my rating is 5 stars. It is reminiscent of a Doris Day movie. I am definitely recommending this book to my friends.
